Necks may require surgical improvement either to correct the features associated with ageing or to reduce fattiness. A fat neck can be treated with liposuction. This will not only remove excess fat, but also tighten skin. Neck liposuction is a relatively simple procedure which may be performed under local anaesthesia and sedation through 3 small and inconspicuous incisions: one under the chin and two under each ear. Surgery usually takes less than an hour and is performed as a day case. A neck band is worn for 2 weeks after surgery. Although bruising and swelling may last 2-3 weeks, recovery is relatively quick and patients from outside Cape Town may return home after about a week. An aged neck can be treated by a variety of techniques. I usually combine neck liposuction with a facelift. For men, an anterior cervicoplasty is a good option. Complications which can occur include damage to underlying structures, irregular result, inadequate or excess fat removal and nerve injury. The result is long lasting and provided weight is maintained you should be happy with the result.
