Men are increasingly presenting for body shaping procedures. Often tummy and love handles can be treated with liposuction. This is performed through tiny incisions over each hip, in the belly button and perhaps elsewhere depending on the individual situation. Abdominal etching is liposculpture of the fat to create the appearance of a six pack. Although bruising and swelling may last a week or two, recovery tends to be rapid and, as long as a good eating and exercise plan is followed to maintain weight, results are permanent and should be satisfactory. Read my newsletter on plastic surgery for men. Male breast development: Gynaecomastia is breast development in men. It is more common than one thinks. Hormonal fluctuations occur in the newborn, at puberty and with senescence (ageing) making gynaecomastia more common during these periods. Many cases are familial or due to certain drugs such steroids, heart drugs, mood stabilisers, etc. Rarely it is caused by more serious underlying pathology. Treatment is to treat the cause if one is identified and to remove the excess breast tissue with surgery. Soft tissue - lipomastia - can be removed simply with liposuction, but where there is more breast tissue (which feels firmer), surgical excision will be required. This may be performed through a scar underneath the areola, extending out on each side or perhaps an even more extensive incision, depending on the amount to be removed.
