As the forehead ages the eyebrows droop, wrinkles and lines appear and the skin texture deteriorates. In my practice, I favour a brow suspension procedure to lift or sculpt the brows into a more aesthetic and youthful shape. This is a relatively simple procedure which can be performed on its own or as part of a facelift or other facial rejuvenating procedures. Brow lift takes less than an hour and is usually done as day case surgery under local anaesthesia with sedation or light general anaesthesia. It leaves no visible scars as the sutures are placed through tiny cuts in the hair. Problems which can occur include asymmetry, excess or too little lift and a feeling of tightness in the head due to the pull of the sutures. Nerve injury causing paralysis of the forehead is also a potential but very rare complication with any forehead lifting procedure. Swelling and bruising are minimal, but take about a week or two to resolve. Patients not from Cape Town can return home a week or two after surgery. The effect is long lasting. The old traditional open brow lift involves an incision from ear to ear across the top of the head or in front of the hairline. This is very rarely required in my practice. I do not perform endoscopic brow lifts for a number of reasons. Some patients, especially men, may benefit from other types of brow lift with local incisions either above the eyebrows or in a wrinkle, which can sometimes heal with good results. Skin resurfacing with chemical peel or needle abrasion can improve the skin quality of the forehead and prudent Botox injections can not only help erase forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet, but can also provide a simple if temporary 'chemical' forehead lift. Testimonials from patients who have had face and forehead surgery. |
