A facelift is the primary component of the facial rejuvenations that I perform. To correct the volumetric changes of facial aging, all patients will also have some liposculpture of the face and neck and lipostructure (fat filling) to areas which require it. A facelift corrects the age induced gravitational descent of the lower face and neck, in other words, it specifically targets:
>
cheek wrinkles,
> jowls and jawline,
> neck
While the primary aim of a facelift is to turn back the clock and make you look younger other benefits may include a more pleasing expression and greater facial attractiveness.
I perform facelifts in my own facility as day case surgery under sedation and local anaesthesia. This is a comfortable way to have surgery, allowing a quick recovery and rapid return to normal.
I do almost exclusively mini or short scar facelifts with the incision running below the sideburn, down in front of the ear and then up behind the ear for a little way. This may be varied according to your individual anatomical needs. Once the incision is made, the skin is elevated from the underlying Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) layer and is tightened with sutures, a procedure referred to as SMAS Plication. Any other procedures such as fat grafting may then be performed. Finally the skin is re-draped, excess removed and the wounds are sutured with dissolving sutures. A light dressing is applied for 24 hours, after which a facial band is worn for a week.
A facelift can be combined with other procedures such as a brow lift, upper and lower eyelid surgery and resurfacing.
Post-operative recovery takes about two weeks, during which time swelling and bruising should settle. Possible complications include bleeding, infection, delayed healing and nerve damage. Overseas patients can return home within three weeks of surgery, but should first check with me before booking flights.
Despite turning the clock back with surgery the aging process remains relentless. Nevertheless, a facelift can enhance self esteem by restoring former youth and beauty.
